The Taj Mahal is probably the most iconic structure in Asia. This mausoleum stands on the south bank of the Yamuna River in the city of Agra. It was built to be a tomb for Emperor Shah Jahan’s favourite wife. Now the complex includes a mosque, formal gardens on over 42 acres, and a guest house.
Located in Cambodia in Southeast Asia, Angkor Wat is the largest temple complex in the world. It stands on a site measuring 402 acres. Originally it was constructed as a Hindu monument, but by the end of the 12th century it had become a Buddhist temple. The Temple now even appears on its national flag.
Notoriously expensive, this small but dense city, island and country is well worth spending time in. It is not just worth it for its mega-mall shopping, great food and blend of cultures, but also for its impressive green spaces and city parks. It is known for its clean, sophisticated image.
The Grand Palace is partially open to the public as a museum, whilst at the same time remaining as a working palace in the center of Bangkok. It has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782. In 1932 the monarchy was abolished in Thailand, but the Palace still has royal offices inside used for government administration.
Apart from value for money, Bali boasts miles of beaches and breathtaking volcanic landscapes. Bali is, for good reason, one of the top destinations in Asia. Tourists in search of the surf go to Ubud; others climb a volcano in the rich Kintamani Region in the center of the island.
Tokyo is the world’s largest metropolitan economy, even exceeding New York City. The highlight for many tourists and visitors is to travel in the spring to witness the cherry blossoms. Tokyo pushes the technological boundaries from talking toilets to every modern commodity you can dream of.
