Probably the most famous tourist attraction in Britain, this magnificent palace dates back to the 18th century and has been the official residence of Britain’s monarchs since 1837. Today it is the home of Queen Elizabeth II and serves as a backdrop to many official ceremonies that happen down the Mall leading up to it.
The Houses of Parliament, with its famous Big Ben clock tower, is a must visit site in London. It faces the River Thames on one side and has Parliament Square on the other where Britain’s Parliament still convenes. It is just a stone’s throw from Westminster Abbey where so many Royal events take place.
Stonehenge is Britain’s best-known prehistoric monument. It is situated ten miles north of the historic city of Salisbury, with its ancient cathedral, in South England. Evidence indicates that the large stones were erected around 2500BC although no one knows how or precisely what for. Many scholars believe the monument was used as a centre for religious ceremony.
Built under the reign of Queen Victoria in the 19th Century, Balmoral Castle is still the official Highlands home in Scotland for the Royal family. The Scottish Highlands have been the subject of many famous poems and it is easy to see why after visiting this fearsome and yet beautiful fortress. You will need plenty of time to see this amazing castle.
In the north west of England, in the County of Cumbria, lies the largest National Park in Britain. This area is generally referred to as the Lakes District. The main attraction is the 12 largest lakes in England, carved by glacial erosion, leaving inspiring scenery. It is made for hiking and boating. Be sure to drive through the lovely towns and villages such as Grasmere and Windermere.
The Cotswolds comprise some of the prettiest counties in south central England. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty which has much to do with its quaint villages and towns, rare limestone grasslands, and stately homes.
