Places to visit in Blenheim
Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre
Omaka presents two outstanding exhibitions. Omaka's first exhibition, “Knights of the Sky”, presents one of the world's largest collections of World War I aircraft and rare memorabilia, including a mix of static displays along with flyable planes. The second exhibition, ‘Dangerous Skies,’ features stories from World War II. These are tales of daring, courage, and tragedy stretching from the British Isles to the forests of Germany, an embattled but courageous Russia, and the Pacific Islands. On display are an iconic Spitfire and a rare Dehavilland Mosquito.
Wither Hills Farm Park
The Wither Hills Farm Park offers a brilliant range of walking and mountain biking tracks on a 1,100ha working sheep and cattle farm just minutes from Blenheim's CBD. The Wither Hills provide an iconic backdrop to Blenheim and the Wairau Valley, and are the perfect place for a short or long walk, up to the lookouts with panoramic views of Cloudy Bay, or along the base of the hills for a more gentle stroll. There are trails for every level of riding, including the easy single track Rifle Range Trail along the base of the hills and the challenging Mt Vernon Traverse over the ridgelines.
Upton Oaks Gardens
Only 10 minutes from Blenheim Airport or the town centre, nestled in grape country. Surrounding the old Victorian homestead are gardens that have been recognised as a 'Garden of National Significance' as awarded by NZ Gardens Trust. These colourful gardens comprise of garden rooms contained within a formal framework of hedges and walls. The much photographed 17th century style Knot Garden is a favourite for visitors. Relax on a park bench where you can take in views of the herbaceous borders and pond.
Marlborough Museum
Enjoy exhibitions with artefacts from Marlborough's 700 year old Polynesian arrival site. Exhibitions also cover: the arrival of Captain James Cook in 1769; the whaling days of the 1820s and 1830s; and European Settlement, including the Wairau Affray in 1843. Discover the Victorian Rooms, and selections from unique historic textiles, toys, and photograph collections. The big day of the year is Heritage Day on 6 February every year. The love to see the Park ALIVE with pioneer heritage skills showcasing lost trades and unique collections.
Wairau Lagoons
Wairau Lagoons Walkway, the walk is virtually flat. It makes a loop from the carpark along the shoreline of the upper lagoon and past Budges and Moerepo Islands to the lagoons' main channel where the rusting hulk of the Waverley sits in the mud. The Waverley was towed from Wellington by the SS Wairau to the mouth of the Wairau River where she was to be sunk to form a breakwater. Before being scuttled, she was swept up the channel in a flood to where she now lies, in the Wairau Lagoons.
Brancott Estate
Brancott Estate Heritage Centre is the home of Brancott Estate wines, the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, loacted at Brancott Vineyard, the site of the first Sauvignon Blanc plantings in Marlborough. As one of Marlborough's premier cellar doors, with majestic views over the region, it offers a dining experience with exclusive wine tours and tastings. Equipped with the latest technology it also provides an audio visual experience telling the story of the brand and the pioneering nature of its founders and winemakers.
